Nottingham Forest announce signing of Premier League winning centre-back

Nottingham Forest have announced the signing of Leicester City centre-back Yohan Benalouane via their official website.

Benalouane has become surplus to requirements at Leicester, and has put pen to paper on an 18-month deal at Nottingham Forest this week. He becomes new manager Martin O’Neill’s first signing of the season.

Leicester signed three centre-backs in the summer; Jonny Evans from West Bromwich Albion, Filip Benkovic from Dinamo Zagreb and Freiburg’s Caglar Soyuncu all joined the club on permanent deals and has ultimately pushed Benalouane down the pecking order.

The centre-back started his career in France with Saint-Etienne, before moving to Italy where he played for a host of clubs. Mixed successes at Cesena, Parma and Atalanta in Serie A resulted in his move to the Premier League with Leicester in August 2015.

The Tunisian international was part of the Foxes’ title winning campaign in the 2015/16 season, and played nine times in his debut season after signing from Atalanta for an undisclosed fee.

Similar to his transfer to Leicester, Benalouane’s fee is undisclosed, and will join up with his Forest teammates ahead of their game against Bristol City on Saturday afternoon. The game may come too soon for the defender however, but he could be named on the bench.

“The manager is a big personality in England,” said Benalouane upon signing for his new club, in an interview which appeared on BBC Sport.

“Everyone knows him; he is a person who knows what he wants, that is important and it is an honour to work for him.”
